Gerakas Harbour

Europe's southernmost fjord

About half an hour north of Monemvasia lies the picturesque harbour of Gerakas, hidden within its namesake lagoon — a protected wetland and the southernmost fjord on the European continent.

The landscape is extraordinary: a narrow inlet flanked by pine-covered hills that opens into calm, mirrored water. The harbour settlement, with its excellent fish taverns right by the water, feels closer to an Aegean island than the Peloponnese mainland.

Over the centuries, Gerakas served as a pirate stronghold, a Byzantine naval base for repelling Saracen raids, and a prized Venetian possession. The layers of history are visible in every stone.

Local tip

Arrive at dusk — the light on the lagoon at that hour is unlike anywhere else.
