Southwest of Monemvasia, a short ferry crossing from the village of Viglafia near Neapoli, lies the island of Elafonisos — one of the most celebrated beach destinations in Greece.
The island is renowned for its golden-white fine sand beaches set against emerald water of extraordinary clarity. Simos beach in particular, with its rare coastal vegetation and double bay, consistently ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Europe.
In summer, ferries run every half hour. Fish taverns and small cafes line the waterfront. Come early — the island is discovered.
Local tip
Simos beach faces southwest. The afternoon light is at its best after 4pm.
