In a beautiful gorge known as the Balli Ravine, near the village of Talanta southeast of Monemvasia, one of eleven historic watermills has been carefully restored to working order.
These mills once served a large part of southern Laconia. Today visitors can watch the full process — wheat poured into the millstone, ground by the force of flowing water, emerging as fresh flour that can be purchased on site.
The surrounding landscape of running water, dense vegetation and old stone is reason enough for the journey. An unhurried hour here restores something that is easy to forget.
